Bday gift for the not-so-little kid

This is pusheen the cat. She is fat. She’s lazy. She likes cake and spaghetti. And sometimes she’s a unicorn. We’ve just discovered her, and of course, the kid loves her.

I tried to order the kid a necklace for her Bday, and was a little taken back that shipping was $10 from Chicago. I can ship a tshirt to new Hampshire for $3 – how is it so much for a teeny-tiny necklace?

Anyways … Its against all theories I have about handmade, but I made the kid a tee in her size for her big Bday.

Since its her Bday, the cat is having her cake. And of course, since her awesome mama made it she says she loves it even more 🙂

Somehow etsy is full of recreations of this cat. Is that normal? In fact I see recreations of lots of comic characters … Batman, adventureland guys, starwars … So is there a rule? We can’t copy the little guy, but once they hit the big time its fair game?

So torn on this …

… Now I’m waiting for the night hawk to fall asleep so we can decorate her room for the morning… Hopefully I don’t fall asleep first.

Crafty man for the drawing queen

Ever see those wooden figures in the art isles, designed to help draw people in natural poses? My daughter used to have one before she even knew what it was, but with all our moving, it wad lost. I thought about buying another, now that she’s so into her drawing… But then realized they are just too boring for our life. Saw the idea online somewhere to make your own using rubber covered garden wire (so you use less but still have a nice thick frame) and cloth. I tried wrapping the body with cloth, but it lacked something. excitment??

So thanks to the world of artistic duct tape, here is the lady I think will fit perfectly into our lifestyle.

She definitely deserves a funky name, but I will leave that up to my girl. Tellin ya now, I’m sure it will be crazy like this lady’s leopard skin. But.. I Gotta run as I have a few more gifts to finish for our handmade Christmas.. yes, yes I do like working under the pressure of extreme last minute. A few I will share, bit the rest have to be after the holiday, as I don’t want too many clues floating around the webisphere …

my recycled christmas becoming a contagious christmas tradition

last year i attempted to make everything for everyone on my christmas list. in the end i ran out of time, and had to buy a lot of things, but this year my family has decided to get in on the game and make it a family wide challenge. mind you there are only four of us (five if we count princess bee) — but still a totally fun challenge. and way more my style.

i have started building a list on amazon — it is a combination of both vintage treasures found on etsy, and actual new things someone can hunt for at whatever thrift shops they find themselves at. i was going to use my pinterest, but they have yet to build an app allowing me to add NEW pins from my cell phone so its lost this battle, and amazon’s universal wish list has won.

the rules of the game — only buy second hand!

where ever you may find it is fair game. kijiji, garage sale, thrift store, antique or junk shop.

OR it can be something handmade but must be made from something found. so again secondhand.

ooh it should be so much fun.. i already have so many ideas!!

some of my favorites so far (for myself) …

quilty patches

i have been saying it for years, but finally i have a plan for a quilt for my own bed. im thinkin black, brown, blue + grey in tall skinny patches. i sa w a few years back how one blogger added the words from her favorite song and i’m inspired to do the same (course i dont remember who it was by now)

i wanted a song that meant something to both of us so i went back to mary j blige and method man… a little “your all i need” to remember the years back when we first met.

to make it extra “special” and filled with luck in ever lasting love i want to reuse my mom n dad’s old quilt. its just a thin summer quilt, but its perfect for my inner layer.

im super excited about the bottom layer though… in my journey to collect all the right colours (my excuse for why its taken me so long) i found a super silky charcoal grey — i think its polyester but that will make it last longer and stay softer longer.

now back to the sewing …

the birthday gift

im on a roll, so why stop sharing. “the daddy” of this little family is very difficult to shop for because he has yet to embrace the wonderful world of handmade. i used to make him pants, cargos, jogging, carpenter.. but that was a long time ago. before he discovered Guess, Parasuco and Banana Republic. that being said this is my last attempt to appease his expensive tastes. i have learned over time he likes subtlety, so this white on white embellished dress shirt should work.

his birthday is tomorrow.

i feel its kinda weak, especially since im assuming it will just hang in the closet. but wait til you see my plan for valentines day!! oh man its a good one!! (and its something handmade he actually ASKED for!)
